Tucked into the quiet village of Bakhog near Cheog, WoodVista is a cluster of seven wood-panelled chalets with private entrances and wide balconies that open onto apple orchards and deodar slopes. Every chalet has its own kitchenette and dining nook, so families settle in like locals. Evenings are for bonfires in the garden and slow dinners of Himachali dham at the in-house kitchen, which cooks Indian, Chinese and local Pahadi food. Shimla's Mall Road is a 40-minute drive when you want it — most guests find they don't.

The balcony view of the deodar forest at sunrise is worth the trip alone. Chalet was spotless and the heater kept us cosy in March.

Went with two kids — the kitchenette and the indoor play area saved us. Staff arranged a bonfire and told the kids ghost stories.

Peaceful, genuinely secluded, great local food. Carry chains in peak winter, the last stretch of road gets icy.
