Sonar Killa Courtyard Home
Inside Jaisalmer Fort, Rajasthan · up to 3 guests · 1 bedroom
One of the few family homes still lived in inside Jaisalmer's 850-year-old golden fort, now sharing two carved sandstone rooms with travellers. Bhawani's family has been here for eleven generations; the roof terrace looks over the fort ramparts to the Thar. Guests join the family for dal-baati-churma dinners, and Bhawani arranges overnight camel camps on the quieter dunes at Khaba, away from the tourist circuit.

Waking up inside the fort before the day-trippers arrive is pure magic. Bhawani's heritage walk is superb.

The quiet dunes at Khaba over the touristy ones — best call of our trip. Star-filled night, zero crowds.

Rooms are compact, as fort homes are, but the terrace and the family's warmth are enormous.
