Kayaloram Tharavad
Kumarakom, Vembanad Lake, Kerala · up to 4 guests · 2 bedrooms
This teak-pillared tharavad has stood on the banks of Vembanad Lake for four generations. Rooms open onto a private jetty where Thomas takes guests out at dawn in the family canoe, gliding past kingfishers and toddy tappers. Annamma teaches a short Syrian Christian cooking class most evenings — meen moilee, appam, and her guarded duck roast recipe. Houseboat day-trips and village cycling loops arranged on request.

The 6 am canoe ride through the mist is the most peaceful hour I've spent anywhere. Duck roast: believe the hype.

Annamma aunty's cooking class alone justifies the trip. We still make her appams every Sunday.

Beautiful old house, gracious hosts. Mosquito repellent is provided — use it at dusk by the water.
