Stay in the 1950s planter's bungalow on a working arabica estate. Mornings begin with a walk through the coffee rows with Chengappa, who will explain shade trees, pepper vines and why elephants are both a menace and a blessing. Meals are Kodava — pandi curry, akki roti, wild mushroom fry in season — eaten together on the verandah. November to January you can watch the harvest and drying yards at work.

Monsoon in Coorg is loud, green and wet — carry proper shoes. The bungalow itself is a time capsule.
